Nielsen supports Trump's goal of securing border

Conservatives were also rallying Tuesday to defend Lee Francis Cissna, the director of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, whose job is said to be in danger as part of an overhaul of DHS leadership now underway. But the order also provides that, "Notwithstanding the provisions of this section, the President retains discretion, to the extent permitted by the Vacancies Act, to depart from this order in designating an acting Secretary". It was also reported that one of the reasons Nielsen was pushed out is because she resisted President Trump's efforts to institute an expanded version of his migrant family separation policy.

She was seen as someone who didn't have a lot of allies in the White House. "He has the right and deserves to have a team in place he feels can best implement his policies".

The official singled out Citizenship and Immigration Services as "the biggest bottleneck" in changing immigration rules, but declined to comment about possible personnel changes at that agency or DHS's legal office. They chided reporters for focusing on the "palace intrigue" surrounding Nielsen's departure - but they struggled to describe, even in broad terms, just what Trump wants from his next DHS chief.

United States media reports said the resignation came after Nielsen informed Trump that several measures he suggested to stem growing Central American immigration across America's southern border would violate federal and worldwide law.

The agency said Tuesday that it apprehended 92,607 people at the U.S. -Mexico border in March.

It didn't help that Kelly had been critical of Trump in appearances since he left the White House - something Trump held against Nielsen.

Following the death of 7-year-old Guatemalan migrant Jaklin Caal Maquin, Nielsen was unable to give a precise figure as to how many migrants seeking asylum have died while in DHS custody when asked by Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) during a Congressional hearing in December.

Whilst the announcement is a preliminary release, a more detail breakdown and final figures will be disclosed in coming weeks. They cautiously predict demand will recover around the end of the year.

The personnel changes could further destabilise the US domestic security agency as it tries to stem rising numbers of immigrants arriving at the border, many of them families fleeing violence and poverty in Central America, that swelled last month to the highest in a decade.

"The president has to have some stability and particularly with the number one issue that he's made for his campaign, throughout his two and a half years of presidency", Grassley said.

Scott, like many others, is looking to Congress to solve the problem by fixing the legal loopholes that force Border Patrol to quickly release families. Once the two men got on the phone, Mulvaney said he would look into the issue, according to Grassley.

But McAleenan has spoken publicly about the need for US aid dollars to countries such as Hondorus, El Salvador and Guatemala - from where many recent undocumented migrants originate.

"This is about how we as Americans define ourselves", Naftali said. Remember, she was the face of the Trump administration's family separation policy, where kids were split from their parents and kept in cages. "The larger point is the attempt to run the federal government at times like a weapon against immigrants".

Praise from top Republicans focused on her devotion to public service, and generally glossed over her role in family separation and other controversies. "She had a background in cyber security". She returned to Washington afterward as Trump continued on a fundraising trip to California and Nevada.

That compares with seven such departures in the first three years of the Obama administration and four for President George W. Bush.
