Students around the world go on climate strike

Hundreds of Greater Victoria students skipped class and went to the B.C. legislature Friday to take part in global student strike over a lack of action on climate change.

More than 200 students filled the steps of the state Capitol Friday joining many across the country in a global movement of youth activists striking for action on climate change.

The group called for more accountability, saying Nova Scotia could become an island by 2040 if more is not done. During the first, guides told Weasel about the way animals have adapted to the warming climate.

"So I'm not quite sure why they think that it is a good idea". Technical issues with the venue's sound system prevented speakers from taking the microphone.

District spokesman Harry Esteve said the message got through.

"Climate change should be the most important", said Orla Anderson, a sophomore at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School.

Thousands of students will join the strike in Australia, despite NSW education minister Rob Stokes' demand that they "turn up to school". In the past, the agency has used capacity limits for the sites of permitted protests to approximate those numbers. In all, 150,000 protesters mobilized across Europe.

About 1,000 demonstrators also gathered at the offices of U.S. Sen. Diane Feinstein in order to pressure Democrats to pass the Green New Deal.

Youth around the world protested in more than 100 countries, sparked by 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.

Halifax Mayor Mike Savage and other city councillors stood on the steps of city hall to listen to the concerns of the students gathered outside. Another teen, visiting from Tampa, Florida, climbed a tree for a better vantage point. "And No. 2, that's just completely offensive", she said.

Compounding youth frustration is lawmakers who acknowledge the risk posed by climate change, but who say some ambitious plans to mitigate carbon emissions and ward off catastrophic temperature rise are too radical or unrealistic. She protested outside the Swedish parliament and in the process grabbed the world's attention. Breanna Santamaria, a Wilson High junior, said that event galvanized students here in a way she's never seen before.

The group mobilized participants via social media. This is an effort to save our lives.

What they're standing for, they said, is what they're standing on: the planet. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown shared live video of the Portland rally on Twitter and added a note of encouragement.

Volkov said he's always surprised that climate change isn't on the news every day.

"What would we do without it, honestly?", said Elkolaly.

Protests also took place in the USA although the turnout wasn't almost as robust. "Climate chaos is ravaging our environment, health AND our economy".

More strikes will be planned if the students don't see the action they want from the government.

Santamaria rides her bike as much as possible. And she's been urging her friends to do the same thing.

"The political climate in the States right now is doing nothing", 17-year-old Max Prestigiacomo, who's organizing a Wisconsin demonstration, told NBC News. Forty-two percent of that comes from animal agriculture.

One, published as part of Youth for Climate France, said: "We do not want to salvage a planet damaged by previous generations".
