DUP Says It Wants a Brexit Deal, More Progress Needed on Backstop

The main government motion was for an extension to the Article 50 process for leaving the European Union until 30 June if Parliament approves the government's Brexit deal by 20 March.

Sterling surged, hitting nine-month highs against the US dollar and a almost two-year high against the euro, as investors saw less chance of Britain leaving the European Union without a transition deal to smooth its exit.

Seven cabinet ministers - Ms Truss, Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay, International Trade Secretary Liam Fox, International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt, Commons leader Andrea Leadsom, Transport Secretary Chris Grayling and Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson - voted against the government motion.

Theresa May is planning to hold another "meaningful vote" on her withdrawal deal by Wednesday - after it was overwhelmingly rejected on two previous occasions.

Lawmakers have twice rejected her European Union divorce deal - and also ruled out leaving the European Union without an agreement.

Seeking to win over dissenters, she has given rebellious Conservative lawmakers a thinly veiled warning that a failure to back her plan could mean no Brexit at all.

And by the far narrower margin of 314-312, they voted down a cross-party bid for parliament to seize control of the Brexit process.

The Government won the vote on giving Parliament the opportunity to choose another Brexit approach by just two votes, with 16 Tories rebelling against their party.

The MPs, earlier on Thursday, rejected an attempt to secure another Brexit referendum by 334 votes to 85, the BBC said.

"But, if we don't have a deal, then we should leave with no deal".

Last night, MPs voted on a government amended motion ruling out a no deal Brexit.

A raft of "remain" supporters, including the People's Vote campaign, had called for patience in the demand for a second national vote with today's parliamentary schedule set up to vote on extension to Britain's departure date.

But another defeat for her deal, a third in a row, could lead May to decide the game is up and that it is time to quit.

Oil prices mixed as OPEC renews call for cuts, lowers demand outlook
US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were at $58.29 per barrel, up 3 cents, or 0.1 percent, from their last settlement. U.S. crude oil exports have set annual record highs in each year since 2014, most recently averaging 2.0 million bpd in 2018.

If the delay is approved next week, May hopes to use it to enact legislation needed for Britain's departure.

Hammond's talks with the Northern Irish party come as the government seeks enough support to pass its Brexit deal, the Financial Times reported.

Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington said the likelihood of a no-deal Brexit had "diminished" with Thursday's votes.

Officials and national leaders in the bloc are exasperated at the events in London.

He said they will "continue over the coming period of time".

"Under no circumstances an extension in the dark!" tweeted the European Parliament's Brexit coordinator, Guy Verhofstadt.

The Council is due to meet next Thursday and Friday (21 and 22 March).

However Brexit comes about, opponents of the divorce worry that it will divide the West as it grapples with the US presidency of Donald Trump and growing assertiveness from Russian Federation and China.

Downing Street said the government was still preparing for a no-deal Brexit.

Article 50 was triggered on March 29, 2017 with the United Kingdom scheduled to leave at 11pm United Kingdom time later March 29, 2019.

He said there were now two options: "To vote for the deal and leave in orderly way or a long delay and I think that would be a disaster".

Conservative lawmaker George Freeman suggested that May had been so damaged by Brexit that she should promise to quit to get her deal through. "Something has to give".
