Venezuela's Adversaries Seek to Show Resolve in Crisis

Opposition leader and acting president of Venezuela Juan Guaidó arrives to Caracas after a tour around Latin America on Mar. 04 2019 in Caracas Venezuela

Now, self-declared interim president, Juan Guaido, has returned to the country to renew his campaign to topple the government of President Nicolas Maduro.

"Next March 9 is the four-year anniversary of the infamous Obama decree, that Venezuela is a threat", Maduro said, during a ceremony commemorating the sixth anniversary of the death of his predecessor, Hugo Chavez.

Earlier, Venezuela's Supreme Court prohibited Guaido from leaving the country, but he managed to escape.

Let the insane minority continue with their bitterness, we'll defeat them.

"That's never stopped us", Guaido said.

He crossed into Colombia on February 23 to lead a bid to bring in humanitarian aid stockpiled near the border, but the move was blocked by the military and security forces in a day of chaos and bloodshed. He called for "anti-imperialist" demonstrations across the country on Saturday, coinciding with marches called by Guaido.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza has accused the US of trying to intervene in the Latin American country militarily, urging the UN Security Council to reject any use of force against the country.

"They thought the pressure had already maxed out", said Guaido, who is recognized by most Western nations as Venezuela's legitimate head of state. "They better know that the pressure has barely begun".

He has vowed to set up a transitional government and hold new elections.

Those reactors continue to spin on, as you point out, producing more material that can threaten us and our allies. Asked whether that was his view, too, Bolton replied: "The president's view is he gave nothing away".

National Security Advisor John Bolton said the U.S. also is putting foreign financial institutions on notice that they will face sanctions if they facilitate "illegitimate transactions that benefit Nicolas Maduro and his corrupt network". He said the Trump administration was considering secondary sanctions against non-U.S. citizens and entities tied to the Maduro government.

"That's ultimately a decision for Venezuelans to make", Mr Abrams said.

Guaido has called on state officials, who have been historically pressured by the ruling Socialist Party to publicly back Maduro, to disavow the government, and has promised future amnesties for those that do.

He urged state workers to prepare for a strike, though no date was given and he said an immediate priority would be to promote a law guaranteeing rights for public workers.

"The moment has arrived and our call, our request, and our complete support for public employees, is to bring about this strike", Guaido told a news conference after meeting with state workers.

The United States and some 50 other countries have recognized Guaido as the legitimate leader of Venezuela and have urged Maduro, who is backed by Russian Federation, to resign so the country can prepare for elections.

Guaido then visited Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador and Paraguay to discuss with leaders his plan for a transition government ahead of holding a free and fair election.

The high command has professed absolute loyalty to Maduro, however, and troops have blockaded border crossings to prevent the entry of humanitarian aid, supplied mostly by the United States.
