Facebook Messenger finally lets you delete texts for real

Facebook began working on the unsend feature last April, after it was reported that a number of Zuckerberg's old Facebook messages had mysteriously disappeared from the recipients' inboxes years after the fact.

The social network has confirmed Messenger users will have up to ten minutes after a message has been sent to remove it, with the feature accessible in both one-on-one conversations and group chats.

If you choose the "Remove for You" option, the message will only be deleted in your chat history. The Unsend feature, by contrast, will allow users to completely remove the message as if it never happened.

The Facebook announcement states that this new feature launches today! Still, if you say something and immediately regret it, you'll be able to unsend it starting today.

In a post on his Facebook page, he argued that "while any rapid social change creates uncertainty, I believe what we're seeing is people having more power, and a long term trend reshaping society to be more open and accountable over time".

Facebook told The Verge its Messenger undelete function is similar to Zuck's power but offers "some improvements to provide broader functionality to people using Messenger".

In a statement released to TechCrunch a year ago, Facebook representatives said, "After Sony Pictures' emails were hacked in 2014 we made a number of changes to protect our executives' communications". "These included limiting the retention period for Mark's messages in Messenger". That new feature as now arrived in Facebook Messenger for iOS and Android. To do this, users need only to tap the message once and select "Remove for Everyone".
