Democrats Aren't Buying Trump's Shutdown-Ending 'Compromise'

President Donald Trump speaks about the partial government shutdown immigration and border security in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House in Washington Saturday Jan. 19 2019

They accuse Trump of holding hostage the paychecks of 800,000 federal employees who are either not working or working without pay as a result of the shutdown.

"President Donald Trump has pushed back after receiving criticism from right-wing pundits who took aim at his offer to allow DACA and TPS immigrants to remain in the US for three more years, vowing that "amnesty" is not on the table". In his speech, Mr. Trump cited the "humanitarian crisis" at the border, where he said young children were being "exploited" by coyotes and women were being sexual assaulted.

It was possible Democrats would unveil that measure next week as the cornerstone of their border security alternative to Trump's wall, the aide said.

"While we commend the spirit of the president's latest effort to end the government shutdown, we at the NHCLC must continue to insist upon a permanent DACA solution for a permanent wall".

Roy Beck, president of NumbersUSA, which seeks a reduction in immigration, said Trump has forgotten the American workers who were central to his campaign promises.

His plan however appeared to be as much an effort to ease his own political predicament on the shutdown as a true attempt to tempt Democrats into a deal as it did not seriously address their demands and he did not consult them before making his announcement.

They said they chose to talk to the back-benchers to try to break the gridlock left when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told Mr. Trump at a meeting earlier this month she would never entertain any border wall money.

In exchange the president wants the Democrats to vote in favor of $5.7 billion for the wall he seeks between the USA and Mexico.

What President Donald Trump billed on Saturday as a compromise to end the country's longest government shutdown pleased neither the Democratic congressional leaders whose buy-in he needs to strike a deal nor the core supporters whose backing has always been at the heart of his insistence on a border wall. Among them: "security items such as advanced technology, infrastructure investments, and humanitarian assistance". "I suggest everybody tune in", she said.

The address comes amid a record-long government shutdown.

Chinese envoy to Canada warns against any future Huawei 5G ban
Trump said his decision in May to spare ZTE came following an appeal by Chinese President Xi Jinping to help save Chinese jobs. But many in the USA government say its technology is unsafe and its users are opening themselves to spying by China .

Mr. Trump and congressional Democrats are now deadlocked over funding for a border wall. While many of them have pressed for measures to protect DACA recipients and immigrants living in the United States under Temporary Protected Status enacted when their countries were destabilized by war or catastrophe, most regard the proposal he put forth Saturday as woefully inadequate.

Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin also said in a statement that he would not support the rumored deal before the speech.

McConnell laid out his plan in a private call with GOP senators late Saturday afternoon, where there was little dissent, according to an official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations.

He proposed to extend protective measures for almost 700,000 young undocumented immigrants who are now allowed to live and work in the United States under the Obama-initiated DACA programme, and shield another 300,000 immigrants from Central American and African countries from deportation from the US. He said that a wall would be built along 230 miles of the border.

Administration officials said the protections would apply only to those now in the Obama-era program shielding them from deportation, and the temporary protected status would apply to those who now have it and have been in the USA since 2011.

The compromise proposal would also allow immigrants covered by Temporary Protected Status - some of whose protections Trump has rescinded - to remain in the country.

Republicans issued statements of support for the President's proposal, including McConnell, who said he intends to bring the legislation forward this week. Others said the president, who has moved to end both DACA and TPS, was trying to give back things he had taken away.

"He's spoken many times about the Dreamers in different ways and I think he would like to see our immigration system fixed", Kushner said of Trump.

The President should re-open the government so that Republicans and Democrats in Congress can work with the White House to find a sensible solution on border security and immigration.
