ExxonMobil, IBM Partner on Quantum Computing

IBM's Q System One is the world's first commercial quantum computer

ExxonMobil said today that it has signed a partnership agreement with IBM to advance the potential use of quantum computing in developing next-generation energy and manufacturing technologies.

Quantum computing rely on a different approach to solving problem, unlike classical computers.

While quantum computing is still in its infancy and is mostly just a part of books and research papers, IBM at CES 2019 unveiled the Q System One that is touted to be the world's first quantum computer for commercial use.

IBM says that the "world first" 20-qubit system is created to assist commercial and scientific organisations harness the power of quantum computing, highlighting examples such as financial data modelling or optimising global logistics operations.

The integrated quantum computing system works very similar to the traditional computers.

The hardware is contained in a specially designed 9x9 foot glass case built by Goppion, a world-renowned maker of museum glass display cases that is best known for protecting the Mona Lisa in the Louvre.

"These organizations will work directly with IBM scientists, engineers and consultants to explore quantum computing for specific industries".

However, the rest of the specs, including the Nvidia Turing graphics remain the same - topping out with the RTX 2080 . The MSI GT75 Titan gets the latest 8th Generation Intel Core i9 processors and the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 8GB GPU.

Globally, IBM received more than 1600 artificial intelligence -based patents including Project Debater, a first-of-a-kind AI system from IBM Research that can debate humans on complex topics. "The IBM Q System One gets us closer to practical applications in chemistry and the development of new medicines, and new materials", wrote Sutor.

The company is also opening its own Q Quantum Computation Center later this year in Poughkeepsie, New York, to expand this network of commercial quantum computers.

The system was developed alongside the Map Project Office, a United Kingdom industrial and interior design studio and Universal Design Studio and it rests in an air-tight environment that is enclosed by thick borosilicate glass.

It also has classical computation to provide secure cloud access and hybrid execution of quantum algorithms, according to IBM.

The issue which comes along quantum computing system is that it requires the developers to develop apps for qubits.

Previously, quantum computers have only been confined to research labs - Microsoft, Google, IBM, and lots of others have been racing to bring a viable quantum computer to market.

In terms of the IBM Q System One's appearance, the computer is defined by a stack of circuit boards and wires, encased in a metal cylinder that sits in a half-inch thick glass case. This makes the system suitable for commercial use cases, IBM said. They quickly lose their special quantum properties, typically within 100 microseconds (for state-of-the-art superconducting qubits), due in part to electromagnetic environment, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations. Additionally, steel and aluminum frames have been utilized to control casing and electronics and decouple cryostat.
