Sheriff: Suspected cop killer 'should have been reported to ICE'

California officer's killing reignites sanctuary law fight

A suspected illegal immigrant accused of shooting to death a California police officer was arrested on Friday (Dec 28) after a two-day manhunt that President Donald Trump cited in his push for building a wall on the border with Mexico, officials said.

Sheriff Adam Christianson said police arrested Gustavo Perez Arriaga, 32, in Bakersfield for allegedly killing Newman police Cpl.

"He was living the American dream", said Stanislaus County sheriff's Deputy Royjinder Singh, who is not related to the slain officer but knew him.

Ronil Singh, 33, a native of Fiji who dedicated his life to law enforcement, was killed in the line of duty Wednesday.

Now, in the emotional days following, the fallen officer's brother is speaking out and thanking law enforcement for capturing the suspect, whom authorities say is an illegal immigrant. He joined the Newman police force in 2011.

Richardson said his department of 12 is grieving Singh, and other agencies are lending a hand.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff said Singh was conducting a traffic stop for a suspicion of driving under the influence when the shooting occurred.

"Officer Singh sacrificed everything".

Host Martha Raddatz took issue with Jeffries' dodging her question about Singh's death, but he maintained that his lack of familiarity with California statutes prevents him from responding to Christianson's assessment. Referring to the arrest, he said, "I was waiting for this to happen". Christianson added that Arriaga had gang affiliations.

"I'd like to thank you for working day and night to make this happen", Singh said.

"That was his goal, to get across the border", he said. Incensed by the tragedy, members of Congress introduced Kate's Law, which would mandate up to 10 to 25 years in prison for illegal immigrants in the US with a criminal history who had been previously deported.

According to the sheriff, his brother and co-worker who were arrested with him, were also in the country illegally.

The three have been identified as Bernabe Madrigal Castaneda, 59; Erasmo Villegas, 36; and Maria Luisa Moreno, 57, he was quoted in as saying in the report. Without more details, it is unclear how sanctuary rules would have applied in Perez Arriaga's case. His brother, Conrado Virgen Mendoza, 34, was arrested in Livermore.

He was shot a few minutes after radioing that he was pulling over a gray pickup truck that had no license plate in Newman, a town of about 10,000 people, officials said.

At the news conference Friday, Christianson had strong words about immigration and border security.

"California law fully permits the sharing of information on unsafe gang members", spokesman Evan Westrup said.
