Democrats say Trump 'plunging country into chaos'

Trump chimed in from the White House, where he has relentlessly tweeted on a variety of issues while being cooped up in the mansion since Saturday, when the shutdown began.

Trump claimed that many of these workers "have said to me and communicated, 'stay out until you get the funding for the wall.' These federal workers want the wall".

Tony Reardon, president of the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU), also said in a Christmas Eve statement about the shutdown that "the anxiety level among federal employees is extremely high and on top of that, there is real anger that they are paying the personal price for someone else's dysfunction". "The whole thing is juvenile".

"These federal workers want the wall", he added. "We need safety for our country", Mr. Trump told reporters after meeting with USA service members in Iraq on Wednesday.

The president spoke to reporters after calling the troops from the White House on Christmas Day.

Lawmakers are away from Washington for the holidays and have been told they will get 24 hours' notice before having to return for a vote. Vice President Mike Pence is said to have proposed $2.1 billion for new border barriers in an offer to Democrats, along with $400 million for other Trump immigration priorities.

Building the wall was one of Trump's most frequently repeated campaign promises, but Democrats are vehemently opposed to it.

Trump, who was elected in 2016, campaigned on a promise to build a "big, attractive wall" made of concrete, rebar and steel across the length of the southern border. Trump had said he'd be "proud" to shut down the government in a fight over the wall.

Flynn heads to sentencing, with 'Good luck' wish from Trump
Flynn has not tried to retract his guilty plea, and there's every indication the sentencing will proceed as scheduled. But none of those men helped investigators as broadly, willingly or sincerely as Flynn, Mueller's team has said.

The partial government shutdown continues as President Trump demands Democrats increase funding for the border wall.

Many federal workers are also reporting for work not knowing if they will be paid.

"If you really want to help America, there are families here who are being impacted by the government being shutdown".

Numerous employees affected by the shutdown also don't work a traditional work week, said Ashley De Smeth, a spokeswoman for the American Federation of Government Employees union. He now regrets going against his instincts past year when he approved a plan to send thousands more troops to Afghanistan at the urging of foreign policy advisers, said a person familiar with the process.

Furloughed federal workers have been given back pay in previous shutdowns.

'Including (expected House of Represetatives leader) Nancy Pelosi, until i fired him, and once I fired him everybody said "Oh why did you fire him, why did you fire him?"

In one way, Trump is right. "I can tell you it's not going to be open until we have a wall or fence, whatever they'd like to call it". In contrast, he's now ready for a reset and a shake-up of his Cabinet to surround himself with advisers more aligned to his political outlook, and he's coming to the view he should have done so from the start of his administration.
