Trump has discussed firing US Federal Reserve chairman Powell, reports Bloomberg

US Federal Reserve Raises Interest Rates Against Trump's Wishes

It noted that "some" further gradual rate hikes would be needed, a subtle change that suggested it was preparing to stop raising borrowing costs. The president has complained that the moves are threatening the economy.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Trump said that the Federal Reserve should "take the Victory" of a strong USA dollar while "the outside world is blowing up around us", instead of raising interest rates. We are absolutely committed to that mission and nothing will deter us from doing what we think is the right thing to do.

But Fed policymakers foresaw two rate hikes in 2019 rather than three as projected in September. He acknowledged new strains in recent months, including weaker growth in Europe and China and a downturn in stock prices, and he said the Fed expects slightly slower domestic growth and fewer rate increases next year.

USA stocks had been up sharply before the Fed's announcement, but the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down about 352 points. But bond prices rose, sending yields lower.

"Economic activity has been rising at a strong rate", the central bank said in a statement issued after the meeting.

Stock markets around the world were tumbling Thursday after the US Federal Reserve dashed hopes that it would approach 2019 with a more dovish policy outlook.

While the U.S. central bank faces a more challenging environment, it is in a far less complex situation than its systemically important peers, particularly the ECB, the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan. Wednesday's was the Fed's ninth hike since it began gradually tightening credit three years ago. It's down 39 percent since late July on concerns about a slowdown in user growth, multiple privacy and safety scandals, as well as the possibility of increased regulation in the future.

Japanese stocks also declined after the Bank of Japan left ultralow rates unchanged, with the threat of trade protectionism and slowing global growth casting a pall over the export-driven economy. "And markets have to react, live, to that "on the one hand, on the other hand" that Powell has to play in this economy".

At his news conference, Powell acknowledged the shift in the Fed's communications strategy.

In football there can be ups and downs during a season, but through Madrid's history there have been a lot more ups". In 2017, Isco told Marca: "I'm not stupid, if I'm not a starter with Ancelotti, Benítez and Zidane it's my fault".

NEUTRAL - The neutral rate of interest, blessed with the wonky moniker "R star", went from being a cornerstone of policy and a fixation of researchers under former Chair Janet Yellen, to a source of confusion under Jerome Powell. But now, the risks of a surprise could rise.

"We will continue to monitor global economic and financial developments and assess their implications for the economic outlook", Powell said at a post-meeting news conference. But it also raises the risk that the Fed will jolt financial markets by catching them off guard.

"What appeared to be even more concerning to equity investors is that Powell is not only ignoring Trump's calls to pause the tightening cycle, but he is also not listening to them". As one 25 basis point rate hike would likely invert the yield curve, many market players are skeptical whether the Fed can raise rates at all next year.

New Commerce Department data released Friday showed the U.S. economy slowed more than expected in the third quarter, although the economy still appears to be robust. Consumers, the main driver of the economy, are spending freely. By 2021, four Fed officials envision reversing course and actually cutting rates to help stimulate the economy.

However, a slower pace of rate hikes in 2019 would not necessarily be great news. "He understands that if the economy remains strong, he'll be re-elected".

Wednesday's rate increase, the fourth of the year, pushed the central bank's key overnight lending rate to a range of 2.25 per cent to 2.50 per cent.

The rate peaked at 2.4 per cent in July, but has move downwards since.

The Committee directs the Desk to continue rolling over at auction the amount of principal payments from the Federal Reserve's holdings of Treasury securities maturing during each calendar month that exceeds $30 billion, and to continue reinvesting in agency mortgage-backed securities the amount of principal payments from the Federal Reserve's holdings of agency debt and agency mortgage-backed securities received during each calendar month that exceeds $20 billion. He added that the latest rate increase "was appropriate for what is a very healthy economy". And continuing trade tensions between the US and China have led to growing fears about the outlook for the global economy.

The more present danger, Reinhart said, is likely outside the United States. And as USA interest rates have risen, loan-sensitive sectors of the economy, from housing to autos, have begun to weaken.
