The dramatic arrest of a Chinese telecommunications executive has driven home why it will be so hard for the Trump administration to resolve its deepening conflict with China.

Meng's arrest also comes as the United States and China try to smooth tensions in an effort to prevent a mounting trade war.

"The concept of getting a quick resolution is fading", Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley FBR, said of the trade tensions between the world's two largest economies.

Wang Heng, a Chinese business law professor at the University of New South Wales in Australia, told the Hong Kong-based newspaper that the US could use Meng to put pressure on Beijing if it doesn't meet Trump's deadline to hammer out a resolution in the trade dispute.

"We'll see more cases like this over the next three months, sanctioning China's state-owned enterprises and individuals, to boost momentum on the U.S. side", Liu said. "It pulls in: Who is going to be the world leader essentially".

National security advisor John Bolton said he did not know if President Donald Trump was also aware of the operation to detain Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou on a USA request as she was changing planes in Vancouver. Such requests must be made through the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of International Affairs (OIA). She faces extradition to the United States where sources claim she is wanted for questioning over possible sanctions violations, and is due to appear in court for a bail hearing later today.

Officials discovered ZTE was selling its products with US technology to Iran and North Korea.

Providing some support were hopes the US Central Bank will react to growing fears of a US recession by not raising interest rates as much next year as previously indicated.

At the behest of the US, Huawei has already largely been excluded from participating in government 5G contracts in most of the five eyes countries. Washington has been pushing other countries not to buy the equipment from Huawei, arguing that the company may be working stealthily for Beijing's spymasters.

The arrest has cast a shadow over the summit, with China demanding Meng's release and saying she has not violated any laws.

Huawei says the USA requested Meng's arrest and it is unaware of any wrongdoing.

Huawei, the biggest global supplier of network gear used by phone and internet companies, has been the target of deepening US security concerns.

"There's laws ... in China that require all Chinese companies to participate in state espionage if they're ordered to do so."

"This is really not good for the Chinese-Canadian Trade relationship", Sui Sui, a Canada-China trade expert and professor at Ryerson University's Ted Rogers School of Management, told Yahoo Finance Canada.

Huawei's business in Iran grew after Western companies withdrew to protest a crackdown on demonstrators in 2009.

Huawei's smaller rival, ZTE (ZTCOF), provides an example of how the U.S. government could go further. She is facing extradition to the United States on US suspicions that Huawei violated sanctions against Iran by providing that country with telecommunications equipment.

In exchange, ZTE agreed to pay a hefty $1 billion fine and put an additional $400 million in escrow in case of future violations.

Both Huawei and ZTE have not only been barred from use by US government agencies and contractors; they have also been mostly locked out of the American market. They will retaliate and take hostages. Top carriers Verizon Communications and AT&T pulled out of deals to distribute Huawei smartphones earlier this year.

Cruz tweeted: "Huawei is a Communist Party spy agency thinly veiled as a telecom company".

Sen. Marco Rubio called for Meng's extradition.

What's likely to be the fallout of Meng Wanzhou's arrest?

"We will deal with the matter from various perspectives". "It's a possibility. China plays rough", Mulroney said. Yet its political and economic system - which promotes inefficient state-owned companies at the expense of nimbler private ones - discourages innovation.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he knew in advance of the pending arrest of an executive for a Chinese tech company but says it was the decision of law enforcement authorities and there was no political interference.
