Body found in Costa Rica thought to be missing Florida woman

The Costa Rican police said that although an autopsy of the body had been completed, they were still awaiting fingerprint results.

Authorities also say they have detained a suspect in the case.

Stefaniak vanished while celebrating her 36th birthday.

A body found in Costa Rica has been identified as a Florida woman who went missing while she was on vacation, according to her family.

On the Facebook page they created for her disappearance, Stefaniak's family accused the local officials and U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica of not effectively "pursuing the matter" because "they feel she was rational at the time of her disappearance and got into a taxi of her own free will". Stefaniak, who stayed behind to enjoy an extra night, was scheduled to fly home the following day but never made her 1:30 p.m. flight, authorities said. She was supposed to return home from San Jose on November 28 but never showed up for her flight, her family said on a GoFundMe page. It was discovered partially buried in plastic bags in a mountainous area.

Her brother, Mario Caicedo, told NBC News that Stefaniak checked in for her flight back to the USA on November 28 but she never boarded the flight.

The last message her family had from her was: "It's pretty sketchy here". She Facetimed a friend in NY, telling him she was going to ask the security guard to buy her a bottle of water.

Costa Rica's government spokesperson Walter Espinoza said the guard was identified as 32-year-old Bismarck Espinosa Martinez, a Nicaraguan who immigrated to Costa Rica in June.

The Miami Herald reported that Stefaniak immigrated to the United States from Venezuela in 2000 and works for a Miami insurance agency.

"Six o'clock, still haven't heard from her", Burton said. Stefaniak had also checked into the flight, Jaime said, which she always did.

The night prior to her flight, Stefaniak took an Uber ride around the town and was dropped off at her Airbnb.

Meanwhile, the lawyer representing the complex that houses the Airbnb told ABC Action News they were "deeply saddened and devastated by the tragic events that occurred last week" and said that the owners were cooperating with authorities.

The body - which was found partially buried in plastic bags - was discovered by cadaver dogs in back of the Airbnb, said Marisel Rodríguez Solís, spokeswoman for the agency investigating Carla Stefaniak's November 27 disappearance.

"'I'm just gonna go ask the guards to buy me a bottle of water.' He says that her phone died, and that's it", Burton said.
