Migrant Caravan: Honduran woman in migrant caravan gives birth in US

The family of six that illegally crossed the border into the United States includes three children, ages 2, 7, and 10, and is from Guatemala, according to CBP.

A Honduran woman affiliated with a caravan of Central American migrants has given birth on US soil shortly after entering the country illegally.

The border crossing - which Tijuana residents use to reach jobs and shopping on the US side and USA tourists use to head south - was closed briefly last weekend after some migrants tried to rush across.

The group was observed coming down on the U.S. side of the wall by a Border Patrol camera operator.

The migrants in Tijuana are part of several caravans that traveled through Mexico in an effort to enter the United States, citing issues such as widespread violence and dismal job prospects in their home countries.

This breach follows a similar incident when a group of around 500 migrants attempted to storm the USA border near Tijuana on 2 December and reportedly threw projectiles at the United States border patrol, prompting American authorities to use tear gas and rubber bullets against the asylum seekers.

Inland, more migrants followed as darkness came, with families including children making it over the fence.

"We're just observing, waiting to see what happens", Mayeni said.

But about 90 minutes later, she and her children were seen on the USA side of the border, according to the report.

The caravan migrants reportedly know that once they're in, they have to be processed and it's hard for the United States to throw them out.

Plans for illegal crossings were curbed by the Trump administration's decision to send troops to protect the border and impose a new policy that requires every migrant seeking asylum to remain in Mexico, where their cases will be heard.

Scores of pregnant women travelled with the caravan through Mexico before reaching the US border.

US officials have restricted applications through the Chaparral gate in Tijuana to between 40 and 100 per day.

About 6,000 migrants were staying in an overcrowded shelter that authorities closed over the weekend, moving people instead to a former concert venue farther from the border.

Those that made it across the fence in Tijuana still had to scramble up a hill and contend with a more forbidding wall to reach California.

U.S. Border Patrol agents watch unauthorized migrants cross into San Ysidro, Calif., on Sunday. "Stand on my head!" one migrant said, egging his companion on. One child suffered a facial injury. Mexican authorities arrested and deported those they considered responsible for compromising the city's commitment to public order.
