Emails show Facebook used Israeli app to monitor phones, mulled selling data

Facebook's seized files published by MPs

One of the most publicised shows how they removed rival Twitter's access so people could not find friends on its Vine video app.

Vine wanted to use Facebook's user data to suggest friends on the service, but after a Facebook executive asked CEO Mark Zuckerberg via email if he could shut this feature down, Zuckerberg replied, "Yup, go for it". "However, that may be good for the world but it's not good for us unless people also share back to Facebook and that content increases the value of our network". MP Damian Collins, who chairs Parliament's Digital, Culture Media and Sports Committee, said the probe established several key issues.

Officials also debated in emails whether to give app developers that spent money in advertising better access to its data, while simultaneously taking "aggressive positions" against apps that competed with them by denying them access to data.

He also said that a change to Facebook's Android app policy that resulted in call and message data being recorded was deliberately made hard for users to know about.

Facebook had objected to their release.

Though the direct payments never came to pass, the point is that Facebook knew that its users were valuable to other companies, and believed that it should receive equal value for making them available.

Facebook's statement goes into specifics, detailing each of the concerns raised thus far by the exposed communications, although arguably, numerous provided answers do not completely address the issues raised - in some cases going off on tangents and pointing towards other mechanisms involved.

"Like any business, we had many internal conversations about the various ways we could build a sustainable business model for our platform", Facebook said. With regards to Onavo, Facebook argues "we've always been clear when people download Onavo about the information that is collected and how it is used, including by Facebook".

Collins said last week that he would release the emails and that he was free under United Kingdom law to do so.

U.K. releases Facebook emails about data privacy

The UK parliament's fake news inquiry has published a cache of seized Facebook documents.

Kramer claimed Facebook ruined Six4Three's business when it shut off certain permissions to data, and claimed the social network continued to allow privileged access to partners that paid big bucks.

Zuckerberg in 2012 underestimated how much giving developers access to data could be a risk.

"Other ideas we considered but decided against included charging developers for usage of our platform, similar to how developers pay to use Amazon AWS or Google Cloud", he wrote.

This isn't the first time Facebook has been in hot water for dodgy practises - in fact, it's becoming a recurring theme ever since details of the Cambridge Analytica scandal emerged early this year, but the newly-released emails provide a level of detail that's far more candid than anything previously uncovered.

Another potentially concerning revelation from the papers has to do with Facebook's acquisition of the now-mammoth chat app, WhatsApp.

In a later statement emailed to Fast Company, the company cautioned that some of the documents, which were originally turned over in a California lawsuit, could be misleading and don't necessarily reflect actual company practices.

"What has happened here is unconscionable", California Superior Court Judge V. Raymond Swope said to Kramer and his attorneys during the hearing.

Facebook said the company was already researching Soros when Sandberg sent an email asking if Soros had shorted Facebook stock. Firms like Definers usually work to find dirt on the opponents of political candidates or causes, not tech companies.
