More than 100 injured in Aleppo in gas attack - Syrian state media

Syrian government claims toxic gas released by rebel groups injured 107 people in Aleppo

Around 100 Syrians have been hospitalized with breathing difficulties in Aleppo, state media and a monitor said Sunday, amid allegations that rebels fired "toxic gas" into the regime-held city the previous day.

Russia, which has given Syrian President Bashar al-Assad crucial support throughout the war, has backed the government in denying it was behind chemical weapons attacks and accusing rebels of carrying them out.

Head of Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights Rami Abdurrahman said there was a stench of gas in Aleppo city after projectiles were fired.

The air raids are the first since Russian Federation and Turkey agreed in September to create a demilitarised zone in adjacent Idlib to prevent a full-scale government offensive on Syria's last rebel-held province.

Russian Federation says it has sent military chemicals experts to Aleppo after reports that shells fired by insurgents in the Syrian city left dozens of people with breathing and vision problems.

Militants attacked with projectiles containing gases on Saturday, causing choking, the agency claimed.

A Syrian doctor at the Aleppo University Hospital said patients he treated were discharged less than two hours after being admitted, noting that they only displayed mild symptoms.

In addition to difficulty breathing, symptoms included eye inflammation, shivering and fainting.

The region could see whiteouts and slick roads throughout Sunday, making travel hard if not impossible at times, Brink said. Dozens of school districts in Kansas, Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa also cancelled school because of the weather.

Activists said the attack is the first of its kind since Russian Federation and Turkey agreed to pacify the situation in northern Syria, the report said.

But it is the first instance since the state media accused the rebels of firing shells with poisonous gas as the namesake capital city of Aleppo was fully liberated from the rebels in 2016 except the western and northern countryside. "This is purely a lie", he wrote on Twitter.

In a statement, Russia's Ministry of Defense said it planned to talk to Turkey about the incident since Ankara was a guarantor of how the militants there upheld a ceasefire.

Abu Omar, a Failaq al-Sham spokesman, accused Damascus of trying to create "a malicious charade" as a pretext to attack rebel towns, Reuters reported.

Among an array of factions controlling Idlib, the dominant force is Tahrir al-Sham, an Islamist alliance led by fighters formerly linked to al Qaeda. Earlier Saturday, government shelling of a rebel-held area in neighboring Idlib province killed at least seven civilians.

A past UN-OPCW inquiry found the Syrian government used the nerve agent sarin in an April 2017 attack and has also used chlorine several times.

"I should say that there are attacks from the rebels into that area, but it sounds unconvincing to me the whole thing", al-Khateeb told MEE. The United States (US) launched a series of strikes on Syrian government sites in retaliation for the attack in Khan Sheikhoun.
