U.S. tourist killed by endangered Indian tribe after travelling to ‘preach Christianity’

US tourist 'killed' by arrow-shooting Andaman island tribesmen

An American tourist was allegedly killed by a protected tribe in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Wednesday.

The seven fishermen took tourist John Allen Chau to North Sentinel Island, where people of the indigenous Sentinelese tribe live.

Its members are describe as the most unsafe tribe in the world, and are also believed to have killed two fishermen who illegally entered their island in 2006.

According to a report published in a newspaper in Port Blair, Chau had visited the Andaman and Nicobar Islands five times earlier too.

Pathak said that the American missionary had asked one of his local friends, an electronic engineer, to arrange a boat and find some fishermen who could take him to the island. "He did not come back on the 17th; the fishermen later saw the tribespeople dragging his body around". It is believed the community consists of less than 100 people who live in three small bands. He had expressed a desire to meet the Sentinelese Tribe, which is known to resist all contact with outsiders, often firing arrows at anyone who comes near.

Indian media reports said he was on an "adventure trip" and that his body had been found by the fishermen. Tribes people killed two Indian fishermen in 2006 when their boat broke loose and drifted onto the shore.

The Sentinelese tribe can not be prosecuted for the crime, as laws prevent them from being contacted to try and limit exposure to disease.

So, we want everybody to step up and make it count. "It will be a challenge but we are ready to accept the challenge". But most of the guys have come to Australia before, they understand the conditions", Sharma said.

A spokesperson for the United States consulate in the southern Indian city of Chennai said only that they were aware of "reports concerning a U.S. citizen in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands".

In this undated photo released by the Anthropological Survey of India, Sentinelese tribe men row their canoe in India's Andaman and Nicobar archipelago.

Regardless of the tribe's protection, Deepak Yadav, a police official in the island chain in the Bay of Bengal, said officers have launched an investigation.

Following the catastrophic 2004 Indian Ocean natural disaster, helicopters were sent to see if any remote island communities required any aid or assistance. However, she declined to provide further details over privacy concerns. They are a hunter-gatherer society and survives on hunting, fishing, and collecting wild plants.

As a protected island, even the Indian navy isn't allowed to interact with its inhabitants.

However after the tsunami one member of the tribe was photographed attempting to fire an arrow at an Indian Coast Guard helicopter.
