GOP keeps Senate control for 2 more years, triumph for Trump

Bernie Sanders has been re-elected for another six-year term in the US Senate

Pelosi's spokesman Drew Hammill said Trump called Pelosi to congratulate her and to note her tone of bipartisanship. "Thank you to all!"

And by 9:30 eastern time, NBC had reported that Democrats would win enough seats to take back control of the House of Representatives.

The results of the midterms - so called because they are held at the midway point within a president's 4-year term - are also widely viewed as a symbolic referendum on the commander-in-chief's performance.

The Republicans have retained Senate control for two more years, shattering Democrats' dreams of an anti-Trump wave sweeping them to a majority.

Some of the states where the Democrats finished strong included Pennsylvania, New York, and Florida.

If Democrats can capture a majority in the House, they could block Trump's policy agenda and launch congressional investigations into the Trump administration.

In midterm elections two years after he won the White House, Trump and his fellow Republicans expanded their majority in the US Senate following a divisive campaign marked by fierce clashes over race, immigration and other cultural issues. A slow-moving caravan of thousands of Central American migrants trekking to the United States has served as ready fodder for Trump's diatribes for border security and immigration reform, and a roaring economy has helped the GOP foster confidence in their leadership.

With 62 percent of the electorate reported, Republican Mike Braun was holding a 12 percent lead in the crucial Senate showdown in IN with incumbent Democratic Sen. The party is favored by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report to flip 18 GOP seats. Claire McCaskill in Missouri and Attorney General Mike DeWine defeated Democrat Richard Cordray in the race for OH governor.

Historically, the party in power loses several seats during the first midterm election of a new president, particularly if his national job approval ratings are low.

The gunman was deceased when police officers arrived on the scene, just three minutes after the first 911 call, officials said. The gunman appeared to have acted alone and there was no immediate threat to the Tallahassee community, DeLeo said.

"Grassroots enthusiasm for President Trump, who did more than any President in history to support Republican candidates, and the Republican Party's expansive get-out-the-vote operation, turned the forecasted Democrat tsunami into a ripple", McDaniel said.

With control of the House, Democrats will chair powerful committees and have subpoena power to seek Trump's tax returns and more aggressively investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether there was any collusion by the president's campaign.

Almost 40 percent of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to AP VoteCast, the national survey of the electorate, while one-in-four said they voted to express support for Trump.

Donnelly - who rarely mentioned that he's a Democrat - had adopted some of the president's fiery rhetoric, ridiculing socialists and the "radical left" and calling on Congress to fund a border wall with Mexico.

Voters between the ages of 18 and 34 backed Democrats by 62 percent to 34 percent, up from 2014 when 54 percent backed Democrats and 36 percent supported Republicans.

Despite his party losing the House, Trump wrote on Twitter,"Tremendous success tonight". "We expect him to follow through and have another successful two years just like he has the previous two years".

Trump has spent months ahead of the midterms deriding the Democrats as bent on destroying the USA economy and allowing criminals to run riot. But the president received negative marks from voters on temperament and trustworthiness.

Two other sources close to the White House said that Trump is already blaming retiring House Speaker Paul Ryan for the loss of the House.

Trump's scorched-earth campaigning came to define the 2018 campaign. It also paves an easier path for another Supreme Court confirmation process should the president have an opportunity to nominate a third justice.
