First races called in 2018 midterm elections

A number of races are so close that it may not be possible to declare a winner on election night leaving control of the House and Senate up in the air

Almost 40% of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to AP VoteCast, a national survey of the electorate, while about 25% said they voted to express support for Trump.

To stem Republican losses, Trump sprinted through mostly white regions of the country, interjecting dark and foreboding warnings about what Democratic power would mean for the nation.

"Nothing is more powerful than the voice of the American people, and they spoke out loud and clear: Donald Trump does not stand for our values, the Republican Party has failed to hold him accountable, and it's time for bold Democratic leadership in Washington".

Democrats seized the House majority from President Donald Trump's Republican Party on Tuesday in a suburban revolt that threatened what's left of the president's governing agenda. "All indications are that neither of those factors support expanding multiples for stocks", said Mohannad Aama, managing director at Beam Capital Management in NY.

On the Senate side, CNN projected by early Wednesday that 11 women would win Senate seats, with two newly elected women joining nine female incumbents.

Members of Congress have also vowed to push harder, using subpoena power if necessary, to obtain information about Trump's summit last summer with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The House of Representatives, which reliably churned out hard-line immigration legislation, Obamacare repeal and steep cuts to social programmes under Republican rule - even though numerous bills died in the Senate - will now start offering up progressive priorities.

Voters also punished moderate Senate Democrats running in Trump-heavy states who opposed the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

The party secured a majority of seats in the upper chamber before midnight, ensuring that Democrats will still have limited ability to slow Trump's nominations and to override any potential vetoes.

There were also other triumphs: Democrat Laura Kelly romped over a favorite of Trump's, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, by a 5 percentage point margin.

Ted Cruz held off the challenge of Beto O'Rourke in Texas, while the party unseated the Democratic incumbents in Florida, Indiana, North Dakota and Missouri.

Prime Minister Imran Khan met his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang on Saturday during his first official trip to Chin. China and Pakistan signed 15 agreements and memorandums on a range of issues during Mr Khan's visit.

Much virtual ink has been spilled analyzing what the effect on the Democratic Party will be of the election of a handful of Democrats who have sharply criticized Israel.

Democrats now need to win only nine more Republican House seats to reach the net gain of 23 seats they need to secure a majority.

Since all such predictions were proven wrong in 2016, when Mr Trump won against all odds, no media outlet or opinion survey ruled out a surprise Republican win.

"Ever since President Trump has been in office, it has just been not the country that I am used to or that I thought I would be in", said Sarah Roth, 22, a Democratic voter from Minnetonka, Minnesota.

Overall, 6 in 10 voters said the country was headed in the wrong direction, but roughly that same number described the national economy as excellent or good.

Still, about one-third of voters said Trump was not a factor in their votes.

The president's current job approval, set at 40 percent by Gallup, was the lowest at this point of any first-term president in the modern era.

Trump is trying to defy historic omens that suggest that commanders in chief often get a rebuke from voters in the midterm election of their first term.

Over in Georgia, it looks like the best Democrat Stacey Abrams can hope for is to force a run-off against Republican Brian Kemp in the gubernatorial contest. It certainly didn't help Republicans that both retiring House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) suggested during the campaign that those programs needed to be reigned in. Some high profile senators are expected to be among that growing pool of candidates in the Democratic presidential primary.

Aides set up televisions in the White House residence for Trump, first lady Melania Trump and their guests to watch election results come in, with the sets tuned to different cable news channels.

A record number of women ran for office this election, many of them Democrats turned off by Trump's policy agenda. Democrat Jared Polis in Colorado became the first openly gay man elected governor.
