We made bingo cards for tonight's Georgia gubernatorial debate

Brian Kemp, Georgia Secretary of State and Republican Gubernatorial candidate, told supporters at a private campaign event October 19, that he has concern over the progress his democratic opponent Stacey Abrams, has made to elevate voter turnout for Democrats in the upcoming November 6 midterm elections. In 2014, she founded the New Georgia Project, an organization that seeks as its mission to register as many people of color and young voters as possible.

Abrams' spokeswoman Abigail Collazo said Abrams was involved in a "permitted, peaceful protest against the Confederate emblem in the flag" while a student at Spelman College in Atlanta in 1992. There was a broader movement, including efforts by students and prominent groups, seeking to remove the Confederate symbol from Georgia's flag.

Abrams repeatedly emphasized her plan to expand Medicaid in Georgia, calling it a "bipartisan solution" that Vice President Mike Pence embraced when he was Indiana's Republican governor.

Graphic rendering of the Georgia state flag from 1956 to 2001, including the Confederate battle flag markings.

With just two weeks to go until the 2018 midterm elections, Abrams - who, if elected, would become the first black woman governor in America, and Kemp, who is white, are now locked in a statistical dead heat, according to RealClearPolitics.

Abrams has made no secret of her disdain for the Confederate images and symbols that dot her state, and the picture of her during the protest has become part of a growing debate about the role of those symbols in places of public veneration.

Abrams's acknowledgement of the incident came after an article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution surfaced showing Abrams helping torch the flag, which at the time pictured a "Stars and Bars" Confederate battle symbol.

After the white nationalist rallies in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017, Abrams advocated for the removal of a massive cliff-side carving on Stone Mountain near Atlanta, the largest Confederate monument anywhere.

"Voter suppression is not simply about being told 'no, ' " Abrams said.

"Paid for by founders of the 2nd KKK, the monument had no objective other than celebration of racism, terror & division when carved in 1915", she wrote in a series of tweets.

The differences of opinion about the flag were reflected on social media, where some said they'd never vote for someone who had desecrated a flag, while others lauded Abrams for doing her part to get rid of a symbol of racism.

Abrams' criticism of the free market echoes her previous claim about not needing "Conservative values to win in Georgia'".

The two sides of Georgia's heated gubernatorial race appeared on stage together for their first debate Tuesday and familiar themes were on hand for the candidates, except a fire alarm about 5 minutes into the program.
