Supreme Court nominee in unusual plea as US Senate nears vote

An undated

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who supports Kavanaugh's nomination, addressed the stream of protesters from the Senate floor Wednesday, talking about how Republicans are coming into contact with protesters in their offices.

A friend of Christine Blasey Ford told FBI investigators that she felt pressured to clarify her original statement regarding an alleged sexual assault involving Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, according to a Wall Street Journal report. On Thursday afternoon, Anti-Kavanaugh protesters marched along Constitution Avenue to the Supreme Court Building and then protested inside the Capitol as well as the Hart Senate Office Building.

Earlier, the FBI delivered the results of its investigation on the sexual assault allegations to usa senators.

Much of the focus Thursday will be on the reactions of three Republicans whose votes are considered key to Kavanaugh's fate: Flake, Collins and Lisa Murkowski, Alaska.

But Democrats said the five-day inquiry was "incomplete" because it was limited by the White House.

With Mr Daines out of the picture, the party would need every other Republican to vote for Mr Kavanaugh for him to be confirmed in a vote tomorrow, in the event all Democrats oppose him.

Also interviewed was Tim Gaudette, who, according to Judge Kavanaugh's calendars, hosted a party in July 1982 that Democrats say could have been the get-together where the assault happened, and Chris Garrett, a Kavanaugh friend who Ms. Blasey Ford says is the person who introduced her to Judge Kavanaugh.

North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp, who faces a hard re-election race next month, cited concerns about his "past conduct" and said she felt his heated attacks on Democrats during last week's Judiciary Committee hearing raised questions about his "current temperament, honesty and impartiality".

"I was very emotional last Thursday, more so than I have ever been", Kavanaugh wrote.

In a separate tweet, he wrote: "This is a very important time in our country".

Judge Kavanaugh can only be confirmed to the Supreme Court after a vote in the Senate, which Republicans control with a slim majority of just two.

Key U.S. senator concerned about Kavanaugh's 'partisan' tone
Last week, a former freshman-year roommate of Kavanaugh's at Yale challenged the nominee's drinking claims. The protesters wanted Manchin to commit to opposing Kavanaugh's potential confirmation to the court.

The FBI report represented the latest twist in a pitched political battle over Kavanaugh, and comments by two crucial Republican senators - Jeff Flake and Susan Collins - indicated it may have allayed concerns they had about the judge.

A week from today, the reporters and Democrats who told us the FBI completed the Anita Hill investigation in less than a week will tell us the FBI needs more time now.

That is because U.S. Sen. Kavanaugh has called her accusations a "joke".

However, Dianne Feinstein, the most senior Democrat on the committee, criticised the scope of the probe, saying: "What I can say is that the most notable part of this report is what's not in it".

That teacher, Christine Blasey Ford, said he drunkenly groped her and attempted to rape her when they were teenagers attending a party in suburban Washington in the early 1980s.

"But I think that his performance during the hearings caused me to change my mind", Stevens said in Florida.

In his testimony, Kavanaugh complained about "a calculated and orchestrated political hit fueled with apparent pent-up anger about President Trump and the 2016 election".

On the hot seat, some senators have been using police escorts in recent days to shield them from protesters and the media. Kavanaugh denies the allegations.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, shown Wednesday, said Thursday that the Federal Bureau of Investigation reached out to 11 people and interviewed 10. Judge has said he did not recall the events described by Ford and that he never saw Kavanaugh act in the manner that she describes.

On Kavanaugh, Heitkamp told WDAY, a TV station in Fargo, "the process has been bad, but at the end of the day you have to make a decision and I've made that decision".

That could back up the review into the first vote, on whether to advance Kavanaugh's nomination.
