Russian police detain nearly 300 protesting against pension reform: rights group

Moscow mayor's surefire reelection marred by public anger over proposal to raise retirement age

Heeding a call from opposition leader Navalny, thousands took to the streets of dozens of cities against the controversial pension reform.

A government plan to increase the age for collecting state pensions brought protests across Russia's 11 time zones Sunday even though the opposition leader who called them was in jail.

In total 14 arrests over the decisions of administrative arrests, one person was detained in the criminal case.

The group said at least 354 people were detained in the city. Russia's second-largest city arguably saw the most robust response with riot police charging at protesters with batons.

In Moscow, where the authorities had rejected an application from Navalny's supporters to protest, around 2,000 people gathered in the central Pushkin Square, the authorities and Reuters reporters estimated.

Protesters say the planned reform places a strain on families trying to plan for the future.

Police violently broke up unsanctioned rallies, including in Saint Petersburg where more than 450 people were detained.

Syria's Assad approves gas attack in Idlib despite warning, report says
Washington's reticence let Russian President Vladimir Putin assert the Kremlin's influence over the conflict. He streamlined the US mission there, focusing primarily on the defeat of the Islamic State.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is 65, has said that the pension age should be raised to 60 for women and 65 for men to address the increasing burden on the pension system.

Plans to hike the retirement age have led to a rare outburst of public anger and seen President Vladimir Putin's approval ratings take a hit, despite some efforts to water down the changes.

The protests coincide with elections for 26 heads of Russia's 85 regions, including in Moscow, which are being held on Sunday. Opinion polls put Navalny's support in the single digits, but backers note he won nearly a third of the vote in a 2013 Moscow mayoral race, and believe he could give Putin a run for his money if ever allowed to run against him on a level playing field.

In several Moscow polling stations there were scuffles between observers and police volunteers, OVD-info reported.

Sergei Sobyanin, mayor of the Russian capital since 2010, received 70.02 percent of the vote, according to results released by the Moscow election commission. The president responded by offering some concessions, but argued that the age hike is necessary because rising life expectancy in Russian Federation could exhaust pension resources if the eligibility age remains the same.

This time he will face only low-profile candidates from the Communist Party, the nationalist LDPR and two other groups, with more vocal opponents barred under new rules.

Olga Sokolova, a 52-year-old factory worker, said she was "dumbfounded" when the proposal came because she had hoped to retire from her physically taxing job at 55.
