Bradley played first and chipped to within two feet. It was a bittersweet moment for Rose, though, as he squandered a winning position on the 18th before losing a sudden-death play-off to Keegan Bradley.

Woods was referring to the special exemption that he was sure to get and unlikely to need in order to play in the championship he's won three times.

Woodland finished 19th at the Tour Championship a year ago, posting a final score of 1-under 279 at East Lake. He fell out of the top 30 and will miss the Tour Championship for the first time.

"That's an incredible achievement, something I'm extraordinarily proud of", Rose told Rogar Maltbie of Golf Channel. "I just can't believe it". To win and to put everything together when I didn't know if I was going to win again, to get to the Tour Championship, to have them here and have what's going on in my life is just so wonderful.

"This has been a hard road back", Bradley said after the win.

Spieth, 25, came into the week in the top 30 in points but couldn't recover from a second-round 71 in which he was one of just six players to shoot over par.

"I'm delighted to be world No. 1", Rose said. Young, aspiring golfers think about it.

"A lot has happened to me over these six years", Bradley said.

Fleetwood's round of 62 was the best of the day, with Bradley lurking three shots back of Rose. Rory McIlroy went bogey-free on the day, but only made two birdies to finish in fifth.
