British Airways investigating data breach from 380000 card payments

HACKED British Airways said customers details have been stolen

"We are investigating, as a matter of urgency, the theft of customer data from our website and our mobile app".

The airline added that it would make direct contact with affected customers.

The attack came 15 months after the carrier suffered a massive computer system failure at London's Heathrow airport, which stranded 75,000 customers over a holiday weekend.

The airline assures that every customer will be reimbursed.

Another BA customer, Stephanie Jowers, said she contacted the airline hours before the hack was announced to query a suspicious charge on her account but was not informed it could have been compromised.

"There were other methods, very sophisticated efforts, by criminals in obtaining the data", he told BBC radio. However, the airline also confirmed that no passport or travel details were stolen. The hack was not discovered until September 5 and has now been resolved, officials said. "As airlines become ever more dependent on software, this creates a greater surface for hackers to attack and so it is no surprise that breaches of this scale are becoming commonplace".

Kennedy International Airport in NY this morning when a flight from Dubai had a number of passengers who were severely ill. The Port Authority of NY and New Jersey declined to discuss the matter further as the situation is ongoing.

Complaining about British Airways is something of a national pastime. An airline representative said by email that 380,000 payments were involved.

The data watchdog has said it would be making inquiries into the incident.

British Airways has said it will contact customers and will manage any claims "on an individual basis".

According to Reuters, the customer data, including personal and financial information involving 3,80,000 transactions, was stolen between August 21 and September 5.

The same breach also hit Sears Holdings Corp., which operates Kmart stores.

American Express said clients did not need to take any action and the company would alert anyone with unusual activity on their cards.

BA's CEO, Alex Cruz, said Friday that enough data was stolen to allow criminals to use credit card information for illicit purposes, and that police are investigating.
