More protesters disrupt Kavanaugh confirmation hearing

Protesters dress as 'handmaids' for Kavanaugh hearings

But within moments of Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley banging the gavel, Democrats launched what appeared to be coordinated protests against moving ahead with the hearing on Kavanaugh's lifetime appointment to the highest U.S. court.

If confirmed, the conservative appeals court judge would be expected to tilt the court's balance to the right. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) said of one noisy protester.

But with Trump's fellow Republicans holding a slim Senate majority, and no sign of defections in the Republican ranks, it remains likely Kavanaugh will be confirmed to the lifetime job on the top US judicial body. The Supreme Court has never answered that question, and it is among the most important at Kavanaugh's hearing since Trump could face a subpoena in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

U.S. President Donald Trump's pick for the Supreme Court has pledged to be a neutral "umpire" who favours the law over personal preference. After Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) stole this Supreme Court seat from Merrick Garland, many among the Democratic base have demanded that their elected leaders put up a fight no matter the odds.

She said Kavanaugh has concluded that banning assault weapons is unconstitutional because they haven't historically been banned, accusing his reasoning of being "far outside the mainstream of political thoughts".

Trump's first nominee to the high court, Neil Gorsuch, was confirmed in April 2017, 14 months after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia created a vacancy in President Barack Obama's previous year in office.

In a second day of Senate hearings, Brett Kavanaugh said no-one was above the law but he would not be drawn on what he called a hypothetical question.

Capitol Police on Tuesday removed 61 protesters opposed to Kavanaugh from the room - often forcibly dragging them as they defiantly screamed about reproductive rights and other issues - and charged them with disorderly conduct.

The Supreme Court has never ruled on the question of a presidential subpoena. Several senators with presidential aspirations, including Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kamala D. Harris of California and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, are likely to continue to use the proceedings to emphasize their opposition to the current administration and build material for future campaigns.

Rafael Nadal survives a bagel and stern Dominic Thiem test
He then rallied past Taylor Fritz 3-6 6-3 7-6 6-4 before beating 2017 finalist Kevin Anderson in straight sets 7-5 6-2 7-6. Dominic Thiem went on long into the small hours, with Nadal eventually prevailing in a pulsating deciding-set tiebreak .

The controversy over the documents has been growing for weeks, as Republicans try to seat Kavanaugh in time for the Supreme Court term that begins in October, and Democrats seek to push the process beyond the midterm elections when they hope to regain majorities in Congress. In 2013, Democrats set the precedent for the Republicans' move by lowering the confirmation vote margin to 50 votes for most other executive nominees.

Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont said about 4 percent of Kavanaugh's White House records have been posted for the public to view and about 7 percent have been made available to the committee.

Kavanaugh's political background comes from being a top aide and lawyer in the George W. Bush White House.

Tuesday's hearing ended with Kavanaugh's formal introduction and opening remarks.

In 2005, 42 percent of Americans said the Supreme Court should make it harder to get an abortion while just 11 percent said it should make it easier.

"The fix is in", Brad Woodhouse, executive director of health care group Protect Our Care, said in a statement.

Kavanaugh had stressed his adherence to this principle at the beginning of the hearing, arguing the standard was key to preserving his judicial independence should he be confirmed, and reiterated those sentiments to Feinstein.

Sasse then used a hypothetical president from the "purple" party that gets drunk and hits someone with their auto to press Kavanaugh if he thought that hypothetical president would be "immune" from being sued or charged with a crime.
