NASA ready for trip to the sun

A rendering of NASA's Parker Solar Probe the spacecraft that will fly through the Sun's corona to trace how energy and heat move through the star's atmosphere

But this sun-bound probe will be counting on the pull from Venus to slow it down even more.

Why is it so hard?

The sun might be a sitting target, relative to Earth, but Earth is orbiting the sun at about 67,000 miles an hour. This same element is found on the nose of space shuttles, to protect them when they enter or leave the Earth's atmosphere. 'The probe will travel through the atmosphere of the Sun, closer to its surface than any other spacecraft before it, ' says NASA in a statement. After that late September flyby, the Parker should make its first close approach to the sun on November 1 - the first of about two dozen solar passes and seven gravity assists from Venus.

The probe was scheduled to be launched from Florida's Kennedy Space Center at 3:33 a.m. Saturday.

The Parker Solar Probe, NASA's epic mission to "touch" the sun, has been cleared to take off on August 11, reports CBS News. Its closest approach will be in 2024.

This will be the 37th launch of the Delta IV rocket, and the 10th in the Heavy configuration.

It weighs a mere 635 kg.

"And it needs to be, because it takes an huge amount of energy to get to our final orbit around the Sun", Driesman added.

Zooming through space in a highly elliptical orbit, Parker Solar Probe will reach speeds up to 430,000 miles per hour - fast enough to get from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C., in a second - setting the record for the fastest spacecraft in history.

NASA postponed until Sunday the launch of the first ever spacecraft to fly directly toward the Sun on a mission to plunge into our star's sizzling atmosphere and unlock its mysteries.

Nasa probe will still be circling Sun at end of Solar System say scientists

"The Parker Solar Probe will help us do a much better job of predicting when a disturbance in the solar wind could hit Earth", said Justin Kasper, a project scientist and professor at the University of MI. The spacecraft will make a total of seven orbits around Venus.

In an orbit this close to the Sun, the real challenge is to keep the spacecraft from burning up.

Sending a spacecraft from Earth to a stationary target like the sun is like trying to throw a dart from a speeding train.

The heat shield is built to withstand radiation equivalent to up to about 500 times the Sun's radiation on Earth.

The spacecraft will make use of an 8ft-long heat shield known as the Thermal Protection System (TPS), which has been made using a carbon composite coated with ceramic to cope with the extreme conditions and temperature fluctuations. The 8-foot (2.4-meter) shield will face the sun during the close solar encounters, shading the science instruments in the back and keeping them humming at a cool 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius).

With the closeness of the Parker Solar Probe to the Sun, WISPR will be capturing images with clarity like never before, he said, because those images actually pick up almost at the same point where the other telescopes loose resolution.

Researchers hope to learn about solar winds and space weather.

According to the USA space agency, Eugene Parker, called this cascade of energy and particles, solar wind, a constant release of material from the Sun.

These radioactive storms are so powerful they are able to knock out satellites, disrupt services such as communications and Global Positioning System, threaten aircraft and in even interfere with electricity supplies.

Tesla board mulls de-listing plan
Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, a major backer of the Vision Fund, has built a $2 billion stake in Tesla already. Most analysts were skeptical, but some said a deal could materialize if Musk succeeded in lining up the right funding.
