Washington restores tough, unilateral Iran sanctions lifted under nuclear deal

US President Donald Trump right and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appear to have different views on Iran

In the aftermath of Donald Trump's announcement to withdraw from the landmark deal curbing Iran's nuclear programme, the leaders of Britain, France and Germany who signed the agreement published a joint statement, saying they will continue to stick by it.

An executive order by President Donald Trump reimposed the sanctions on financial transactions that involve US dollars, Iran's automotive sector, the purchase of commercial planes and metals including gold.

The sanctions Mr. Trump reimposed at midnight were lifted by former President Barack Obama as part of the 2015 Iran deal.

The other parties to the 2015 nuclear agreement - Britain, France, Germany, China and Russian Federation - say Iran was abiding by its commitments and have vowed to salvage the deal by ensuring economic benefits continue to flow to the country. But that has proven hard: European companies have pulled out of Iran, arguing that they can not risk the prospect of damage to their US business. "They want to launch psychological warfare against the Iranian nation and create divisions among the people", he said in a televised interview. "I am asking for WORLD PEACE, nothing less". The unilateral withdrawal came despite other parties to the agreement - Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the European Union - pleading with Trump not to abandon the pact aimed at blocking Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

The first of two rounds of United States sanctions target Iran's access to U.S. banknotes and key industries, including cars and carpets.

"We are always in favor of diplomacy and talks..."

"Our policy is based on a clear-eyed assessment of the Iranian dictatorship, its sponsorship of terrorism, and its continuing aggression in the Middle East and all around the world", President Trump said in a statement.

New Report Sheds Light on Presidential Twitter Tirade Against Robert Mueller
She told reporters at her daily news conference that Trump was not indulging in obstruction of justice by issuing such a tweet. Along with their defense of collusion, Trump and Giuliani have begun personal attacks on Robert Mueller , the special counsel.

The official said the United States expects Iran will blame it for any new hardships, saying, "They've been doing it for nearly 40 years".

"If the ayatollahs want to get out from under the squeeze, they should come and sit down".

"Preserving the nuclear deal with Iran is a matter of respecting global agreements and a matter of worldwide security". "But talks need honesty", Rouhani said.

The US has long designated Iran as the world's foremost state sponsor of terrorism, Pompeo noted Sunday, adding that the Islamic Republic can not expect to be treated as an equal in the worldwide community until it halts such activities. "But if the government has a serious plan they can control the situation".

US trade with Iran stood at $258 million (Dh948m) in 2016, according to the US Census Bureau, while exports to Iran from the European Union, which will be affected by secondary sanctions, were worth $13 billion a year ago.

The European commission today put in place never-before-used legislation to protects the continent's firms from USA sanctions which not only target Tehran but their trading partners.
