Zimbabwe rivals both say on course for election victory

Briefing the media in Harare this mid morning, ZEC Chairperson, Justice Priscilla Chigumba said the results will be announced as they come in, adding that they are confident that all the results will be announced earlier than the stipulated 5 days.

Officials on Tuesday counted votes a day after millions of Zimbabweans peacefully cast their votes in a process closely watched by global monitors, who have yet to announce whether the election was free and fair.

Zimbabwe's main opposition is claiming that voting results forms were not posted at more than one-fifth of the country's polling stations as the law requires.

Mugabe, wearing a dark suit and red tie, was greeted with cheers after casting his ballot but did not answer journalists' questions about who he voted for.

Incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who took over after Mugabe's departure, said he had received "extremely positive" information.

Mnangagwa, 75, has promised change and is the front-runner, benefitting from tacit military support, loyal state media and ruling party controls of government resources.

"Zimbabwe experienced a lovely expression of freedom and democracy. In our millions, we voted in the spirit of tolerance, mutual respect and peace", Mnangagwa wrote on Twitter after polls closed.

The electoral commission says it found no "cheating" in Monday's election, the first since longtime leader Robert Mugabe stepped down in November under military pressure.

During Mugabe's rule, national elections were overshadowed by repeated voting procedure violations and the suppression of the opposition.

Previously solid health and education services are in ruins and millions have fled overseas to seek work.

In Harare 75% of the votes have been finalised while in Manicaland 56%, has been completed.

"In African elections, often stakes are very high and nobody has a backup plan for losing", said John Dramani Mahama, former president of Ghana and head of the observer mission from the Commonwealth group of nations, mostly former British colonies.

"We want these degrees we hold to be put to use and for our kids to appreciate the value of education".
