Inside Trump's isolation after the Putin summit

Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen doesn't believe Russian election interference favored Trump

On Thursday, the White House said Trump "disagrees" with Putin's offer to swap the questioning of 12 Russians accused of 2016 election interference for an interview with the former USA ambassador.

The director of national intelligence, Dan Coats, also testified that "we expect Russian Federation to continue using propaganda, social media, false-flag personas, sympathetic spokesman and other means to influence, to try to build on its wide range of operations and exacerbate social and political fissures in the United States".

"This issue [of a referendum] was discussed", he said, adding that Mr. Putin made "concrete proposals" to Mr. Trump on solutions for the four-year, Russian-backed insurgency in eastern Ukraine, which has killed more than 10,000 people.

"The summit with Russian Federation was a great success, except with the real enemy of the people, the Fake News Media", Trump wrote in a tweet on Thursday. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal planning, said the talks would also cover nuclear proliferation, North Korea, Iran and Syria.

As the White House tried to put some distance between the two leaders, Trump made a jarring move in the opposite direction on Thursday, offering to host Putin in the autumn.

During the same press conference, Trump praised Putin's "incredible offer" of a deal to swap interrogations.

'I said the word would instead of wouldn't, ' he says regarding Russian interference in 2016 USA election.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told ABC Radio Australia on Thursday the two leaders "broke some ground across a broad range" of issues.

The week was one of the toughest for Trump since he took office 18 months ago as aides struggled with damage control and convincing Americans that the president did not favour Russian interests over his own country's. "It wasn't always conciliatory in that meeting", Trump said, without elaborating.

Trump Reverses Summit Remarks, Saying Russia Meddled in Election
The state news agency RIA-Novosti quoted a political analyst who believed Putin appeared to be the stronger of the two leaders. With that, Trump declared the contretemps over, insisting, "I think that probably clarifies things pretty good by itself".

On Thursday, Trump said he was "not happy" that the Federal Reserve was raising interest rates, breaking with long-standing tradition at the White House of avoiding any influence on the USA central bank. USA intelligence agencies accuse Putin of directing interference to sway the election against Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton toward Republican Trump.

Well, Judy, I think, before we turn to that, on the Ukraine piece, just so everyone knows, there's no provision in the Minsk agreement, which is the guiding, direct document that will hopefully provide some hope for lasting peace in Ukraine, about a referendum.

On Friday evening, not long after he arrived in New Jersey for a weekend at his golf club, Trump was again defending his summit with Putin.

When Trump said he couldn't see any reason why Russian Federation "would" have been involved in the USA presidential election what he meant to say was "wouldn't".

President Trump has faced harsh criticism following his meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Monday. Hours later, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders emerged to say Trump had merely tried to put a stop to the questioning by saying "no", although he continued discussing Russian Federation after that.

The U.S. Senate rebuked the president for not outright rejecting the proposal, overwhelmingly passing a non-binding resolution against allowing Russian Federation to question U.S. officials.

The former Obama official said it's not necessarily surprising Coats doesn't have a record of what was said between Trump and Putin because it can take "several days" to compile and distribute.

Putin faces no serious political opposition at home, and leads a country that has never experienced a democratic transfer of power.

Rosenstein last week announced that 12 Russian intelligence officials had been charged with computer hacking and other offences during the 2016 election.
