Theresa May presses on with Brexit plan after high-profile resignations

Theresa May and David Davis

The Gibraltar Government has vowed to leave "no stone unturned" to protect the Rock ahead of its departure from the European Union as the UK Government was thrown into turmoil by the sensational resignations in quick succession of Brexit Secretary David Davis and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.

They offered their support to the Prime Minister after the government was rocked by a spate of resignations, with supposed cabinet unity over her Brexit negotiating position in tatters.

- Why wouldn't they want to challenge Mrs May?

Widdecombe, well-known in Britain as being characteristically blunt, served in government under Prime Minister John Major, and in opposition under William Hague, where she was frequently tipped as a future party leader.

They must submit their letters to the 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady.

Allies of Mrs May said that just six MPs expressed dissent in the course of the meeting.

Asked about the potential impediments to the United Kingdom joining the trade deal under a soft Brexit scenario, Peters said: "I think what you're seeing in terms of United Kingdom politics right now is the difference between a soft and a hard Brexit, and we don't know where they're going to land".

Mr Buckland said there had been a realisation that "we all hang together or we all hang separately". "If the government plans to get the deal through on the back of Labour Party votes, that would be the most divisive thing it could do and it would be a split coming from the top".

He failed there. But perhaps Trump saw his earlier appearance on Fox and Friends in November a year ago when he laid it on thick, saying the President was "one of the great huge global brands" who was "penetrating corners of the global consciousness that I think few other presidents have ever done".

May's personal authority was badly damaged after she called a snap election previous year to strengthen her hand in Brexit talks but instead she lost her parliamentary majority, meaning she has to rely on a small Northern Irish party to govern.

The UK, Trump said, was in "a situation that's been going on for a long time".

Washington has since told countries they must stop buying the OPEC producer's oil from November 4 or face financial consequences. The rial currency has fallen, prices have risen and the country has been hit by street protests and strikes.

Mr Barrow, who stepped down as leader of the authority in December 2015, tweeted his thoughts on the latest Brexit fallout in the wake of David Davis' Sunday night resignation and before Boris Johnson stepped down from his position as Foreign Secretary.

The Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, has already written to Mr Johnson and Mr Davis to thank them and has also written to the new Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab.

During that campaign he travelled around the country in a Vote Leave bus controversially emblazoned with the claim that exiting the European Union would bring £350 million a week back to Britain to spend on the NHS.

His replacement by Mr Hunt, a Remainer in the referendum campaign, is likely to further antagonise some Brexiteers.

Britain's Secretary of State for International Trade Liam Fox leaves Downing Street after this morning's cabinet meeting in Westminster, London, Britain, July 10, 2018.

Attorney General Jeremy Wright was appointed to replace Hancock as the culture secretary, with Geoffrey Cox becoming the new attorney general.

He said: "From what she has said Brexit does not mean Brexit and what we will end up with is the very worst of both worlds - still in the European Union but with no vote".

Mr Hunt said it was a moment to show that Britain remained a "strong, confident voice in the world". "But we will work it out and all countries will be happy".

Trump said it was up to the British people to decide if Mrs May remained in power while speaking to reporters at the House House before boarding Air Force One.

May's proposals for a "common rulebook" on goods "hands control of large swathes of our economy to the EU", he said.
