Republicans help bring down their party's 'compromise' immigration bill

A mother migrating from Honduras holds her 1-year-old child as surrendering to U.S. Border Patrol agents after illegally crossing the border Monday

Trump tweeted on Wednesday morning.

"I told them a few hours ago, I said 'look, pass something, or come back to something that would be a variation, but get something you want, ' " he said.

Trump said he hadn't gotten "overly excited" about the House bill because it wouldn't pass the Senate.

The judge also issued an injunction against any more separations, and gave federal authorities 10 days to allow parents to call their children if they are not already in touch with them.

"So we're going to have strong, very strong borders", the president said, "but we're going to keep the families together".

No Democrats voted for the bill.

Rep. Martha McSally, R-Tucson, was the only Arizona lawmaker to vote for the bill, with the state's four other Republicans joining its four Democrats in opposition.

The defeat reflects GOP worries over alienating conservatives, whom they'll need in this fall's elections.

Final passage remained in doubt because many conservatives are simply opposed to the legislation's underlying provision - a chance for citizenship for many immigrants who arrived illegally in the U.S.as children. It fell on a 301-121 vote.

Trump's views on the issue have repeatedly flip-flopped.

Zimbabwe's main opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa , said: 'Our prayers go out to the injured and we hope no lives have been lost. Weeks of political chaos led former President Robert Mugabe to resign after 37 years in office.

Trump has demanded that Congress resolve the family separations with legislation, amid an uproar at home and overseas over the separation of more than 2,300 children from their parents that resulted from his administration's policy of "zero tolerance" toward illegal immigration.

The more hardline bill, H.R. 4760, the Securing America's Future Act of 2018, was always considered the less like to pass even though the GOP had the votes to reach the magic number of 218 in the House without any Democratic support.

Congress is set to recess on Thursday for an extended July 4 holiday, so the focus on the so-called compromise bill is likely to run out the clock before lawmakers can consider a much more limited proposal that would seek to fix only the family separations crisis. He tweeted support for it early Wednesday, five days after saying they should abandon it as a waste of time. It says that the measure "would support the administration's goals" on border security and restricting legal immigration.

Immigration has always been among the most intractable issues in American politics, with Congress repeatedly failing to pass comprehensive reform.

Chao told the protesters, "Why don't you leave my husband alone?" The asylum seekers had rafted across the Rio Grande from Mexico and were detained by U.S. Border Patrol agents before being sent to a processing center for possible separation. They also are asking for an estimated cost of reuniting families.

That was defeated 230-190, with Republicans calling it a distraction from the bigger debate over illegal immigration.

But the measure was widely expected to fail.

The Republican-led House has struggled to find a successful immigration approach.

The bill was the latest attempt by GOP leaders to craft legislation that included the "four pillars" the White House demanded: protection for Dreamers, increased border security, an end to the visa diversity lottery and a reduction in family, or "chain", migration.

"This bill is even stronger than the last bill at building the wall, front-loading the money, so President Trump can have the money to build the wall, close loopholes, re-unite families, all of those things", Scalise said. House leaders had originally intended the compromise vote to take place on the same day.
