G7 agrees to fight protectionism as Trump threatens allies on trade

Trump tweeted from on board Air Force One, just hours after leaving the G7 summit.

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and G7 leaders Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May, France's President Emmanuel Macron, Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel, and U.S. President Donald Trump discuss the joint statement following a breakfast meeting on the second day of the G7 meeting in Charlevoix city of La Malbaie, Quebec, Canada, June 9, 2018.

President Trump seemed unconcerned about ruffling a few feathers Friday at the annual Group of Seven nations summit in Canada.

Trump repeated his assertion that the United States has been taken advantage of for decades, citing Canada's tariffs on milk to protect its dairy farmers.

"PM Justin Trudeau acted so meek and mild", he tweeted. Trudeau confirmed he had warned Donald Trump his country would impose retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods from July 1, denouncing Trump's decision to invoke national security concerns to impose tariffs on aluminum and steel as "insulting" to the Canadian war veterans who had fought alongside USA allies. Trump has asked countries to end tariffs and trade barriers in his push for "fair and reciprocal" trade.

The US had nevertheless appeared to agree a form of words on contentious issues thanks to an all-night negotiating session by officials from all sides. Trump hasn't said whether he is considering the proposal. Earlier, he welcomed President Trump to the summit with a warm handshake.

On 1 June, the United States imposed a 25% tariff for steel and 10% for aluminium on imports from the European Union (EU), Canada, and Mexico.

The back-on-track summit followed a whirlwind of diplomacy after Trump called off the meeting in late May.

Melania reappears after 25 days out of public view
Her absence launched a wave of guesses in the mainstream and social media, where all sorts of theories were suggested. During her recovery from surgery they reported everything from near death, to facelift, to left the W.H.

His words contained nothing he had not said before, both in public and in private conversations with Mr Trump, his office said later.

In addition to the US and Canada, the group includes Britain, Italy, France, Germany and Japan.

In an "extraordinary" exchange between the leaders on Friday (local time), Mr Trump repeated a list of grievances about USA trade - mainly with the European Union and Canada, a French presidency official said.

The communique was issued after tumultuous summit that mainly had Washington squaring off against its longtime allies over Russian Federation, trade, climate issues, and the Iran nuclear accord.

There was also an agreement to disagree on climate change in the wake of Trump's decision to leave the Paris climate accord past year which further underlined the divide between the Group of Seven's powerhouse and its six co-members.

The comments come in the midst of Trump's ongoing trade war with allied nations. A subsequent visit in April this year warranted only a working lunch for the German leader, several days after fellow European Union leader Macron got the full, formal state dinner treatment from Trump.

While Italy's new premier Giuseppe Conte, the head of a populist coalition, sided with Trump, many other European leaders were horrified and warned against the idea.
