The Primaries Were Important Last Night - Here Are The Key Takeaways

In New Jersey, establishment-backed Democrats muscled past liberal challengers in key congressional races, setting up contests in November that will test whether more moderate candidates will fare better against Republicans in swing districts. Because the issue is, is that they have so many Democrats running in these individual races, and Republicans are really solidified between one, two, or three candidates, and so if two republicans are the top two vote-getters, then no Democrats make it to the November election.

Republicans did notch up one clear win on Tuesday night.

Recognizing the high stakes in California, Trump sought to energize his supporters in a series of tweets praising his preferred candidates.

Iowa, once a classic blue-leaning battleground state (it went for Obama handily in 2008 and 2012), is moving toward the GOP and particularly Trump because of its high concentration of conservative white working-class voters and its small minority population. But so far neither party appears to have suffered any major setbacks. This suggests a more competitive race than one might expect in deep blue California. Party Republicans strongly support the tax law that Mr. Trump signed previous year, though it is more of a drag than a lift among voters overall, the new Journal/NBC News poll shows. "The political pundits just don't get what is going on out there - or they do get it but refuse to report the facts!"

Democrats will likely also play up Trump's support for Cox - including election-day tweets.

Ivey, who stepped into the governor post after the resignation of Robert Bentley a year ago, will seek a full term in November.

In Iowa's 1st District, incumbent Republican Rep. Rod Blum will face state Rep. Abby Finkenauer, who won the Democratic primary with 67 percent.

In 2010, California voters approved a referendum ending its traditional partisan primary system, where Republican voters take GOP ballots and Democrats select nominees from their party's slate.

Democrats need to add 23 seats nationwide to retake the House.

With Johnson's clemency, there is possibly hope that others facing life for nonviolent charges will also be granted clemency. Barnett, said earlier that Johnson feels overwhelmed with emotion and like she's been "resurrected from the dead".

It was a big night for women, including a Democratic former Navy pilot running for a House seat in New Jersey. Meanwhile, in Alabama, Republican Congresswoman Martha Roby was forced into a runoff to save her seat, after she took political heat for refusing to endorse President Trump when the "Access Hollywood" tape surfaced, saying, "I can not look my children in the eye and justify a vote for a man who promotes and boasts about sexually assaulting women". Her Republican opponent in the July runoff is a former Democrat-turned-Trump ally Bobby Bright.

If Grisham wins, she would be the state's second Latino state executive.

Mississippi Republican Sen. Roger Wicker won his primary contest as did New Jersey Sen.

The other two measures give tax breaks to homeowners who install rain capture devices and delay the effective start date for ballot measures by about six weeks. Well, some races are still too close to call, but so far, it looks so good for California Democrats.

Republican businessman Bob Hugin claimed the Republican nomination to face Menendez this fall.

Democrats also put forward candidates in New Jersey that they believe will have a good chance of picking up a couple of Republican-held seats left open by retirements, and put up strong challenges against Republican Reps.

"So there's quite a bit of concern that this would backfire and that congressional districts that would elect a Democrat in the end would be given only the choice of Republicans".

Meanwhile, Republicans in districts won by Hillary Clinton, also managed to stay on the November ballot in key districts as well, in addition to securing a general election spot in the gubernatorial race.

A Democrat-controlled House would likely stall much of Trump's policy agenda and could lend strength to any potential effort to impeach Trump if Democrats decide grounds exist, either by virtue of the ongoing probe into Russian election interference by special counsel Robert Mueller or other reasons. And for the second consecutive election, there will be no Republican on the U.S. Senate ballot in the fall, after Sen.
