UAE, Bahrain support Pompeo's list of demands for Iran

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demonstrated as much with 100,000 hidden Iranian documents that Israel found. Critics yawn, but some of those showed Iranian determination to roll ahead with its weaponizing ambition, if at a slower pace.

Trita Parsi, head of the National Iranian American Council, called most of Pompeo's demands "non-starters".

Let's start with that first assumption.

The new USA demands are so intrusive and broad that Iran's rejection of them seemed all but certain even before Rouhani spoke. The economy is collapsing, strikes are happening, outright rebellion could be in the offing and the regime could be in peril without that trade.

Javad Zarif said America was "regressing to old habits". "At the end of the day, the Iranian people will get to make a choice about their leadership. It will not have the resources to do both".

Trump's newly installed top diplomat also hinted at the possibility of military action should Iranian leaders reconstitute their nuclear program. Pompeo says that deal was a loser. It would need to accept broader constraints not just on its nuclear activities but also on its missile programme and wider behaviour in the region.

"All world countries want independence in their decision-making. and it is not logical that the Americans decide for the world", Rouhani said on Monday following the anti-Iran remarks of U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The US demand that Tehran stop uranium enrichment goes further than the Iran nuclear deal.

Now the Europeans, Russians and Chinese are part of a much larger group America wants to press the Iranians to change their ways. British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson remarked: "The prospect of a new jumbo Iran treaty is going to be very, very hard". Noting the protests over the economic crisis and women's rights since December, Pompeo made it clear the Administration sides with Iran's "struggling people". Iran is spreading aggressively throughout the Middle East.

Despite recent efforts from European Union leaders to safeguard the 2015 deal, Zarif has accused the bloc of not doing enough to preserve its future, saying it "needs to take more practical strides and increase its investments in Iran if it is to continue its economic cooperation with the Islamic Republic [Iran]".

Pompeo stopped short of calling directly for regime change, but he urged Iranians to think of Rouhani and Foreign Minister Javad Zarif as part of a corrupt, venal and risky regime. The closest he came to that was saying, "We hope, indeed we expect, that the Iranian regime will come to its senses and support - not suppress - the aspirations of its own citizens".

Mr Pompeo said that if Iran were to abide by the stricter terms, including ending its ballistic missile programme and its interventions in regional conflicts from Yemen to Syria, the USA would lift its sanctions. "The U.S. put a lot on the table if Iran ends its malign activities including the restoration of full diplomatic and economic relations", Mark Dubowitz, the chief executive of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told me. "But you know, we will hold those doing prohibited business in Iran to account". In his enthusiasm for a bargain with Iran, Obama was willing to normalize a nation that was aiding and abetting a horrific crime against the Syrian people, overthrowing the government in Yemen and undermining the elected one in Iraq.

Those moves to save the deal indicate the Europeans would be reluctant to join a coalition with the negotiate a new deal. It shipped missiles to terrorists in Lebanon aimed at Israel. But the norms that separate rogue states from global citizens were weakened in the process.
